Poetry Course 14-18

“Study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in.”
- Leonardo da Vinci -

Overview

This 10 hour course is most popular with 14-18 year old students studying English Literature and Language and enhancing the core skills of poetry analysis and creative writing. Lesser known poems have been selected which students are unlikely to have read before to spark imagination.

PART 1: In each session students will be introduced to an unseen poem that they are extremely unlikely to have encountered. Each poem is selected to introduce a new theme and literary techniques.

  • Reading of the poem
  • Discussion and analysis of the poem covering the range of assessment objectives, talking about language, imagery, structure, form and effects.
  • Key themes, poetic techniques and effects.

PART 2: Using the themes of the poem as a diving off point, the second half of each session will cover creative writing with students writing in response to the theme identified.

  • Write a poem in response to the one they have read.
  • Ella will be on hand to assist with writing techniques and advice.
  • Students share back sections of their own poems.
  • Further reading tips plus Q&A.
